Viola Davis, born on August 11, 1965, in Saint Matthews, South Carolina, is an acclaimed American actress known for her powerful and precise performances.
Her career began on the stage, where she quickly garnered critical recognition, earning her first Tony Award nomination for her Broadway debut in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars (1996). She went on to win two Tony Awards for her work in other August Wilson plays: King Hedley II (2001) and Fences (2010).
She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her reprisal of her role in the 2016 film adaptation of Fences, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for How to Get Away with Murder, making her the first Black woman to achieve both. Her memoir, “Finding Me,” was a New York Times bestseller, and its audiobook earned her a Grammy Award in 2023, solidifying her EGOT status. In 2025, she was honored with the Cecil B.
