The U.S. government, under the administration of President Donald Trump, has announced the immediate suspension of work visas for Nigerian and other foreign truck drivers. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the decision was made to protect American jobs and ensure public safety.
“The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailers on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers,” Rubio said in a statement.
This policy is part of President Trump’s broader initiative to tighten immigration policies since his return to the White House in January 2025.
In a related move, the administration has also implemented a new visa bond policy. The pilot program, which began this week, requires visa applicants from countries with high rates of visa overstays to deposit a security bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.
The rule is designed to ensure that visitors return to their home countries before their visas expire. It also applies to individuals who have obtained “citizenship by investment” without residency requirements, with designated airports tasked with overseeing compliance.
