Former Nigerian Finance Minister and current WTO Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, wants the world to change its tune about Africa. During a powerful TED Talk, she challenged the tired old stereotypes of a continent plagued by corruption and dependency. Her message? Africa is rewriting its own story, and Nigeria is leading the charge.
Okonjo-Iweala stressed that Africans are tired of tolerating corrupt leadership. In her own words, “When you hear about the corrupt Africa, I want you to know that people and governments are working hard to fight this problem in many countries, and successes are beginning to emerge.”
While acknowledging that the fight is far from over, she highlighted a new, genuine political will to confront these issues head-on.
Africa, she argued, is done being seen as a charity case. Citizens are taking control of their destinies through bold reforms, stronger democratic institutions, and a clear openness to change. “We can invite partners to support us,” she said, “but we have to start ourselves.” It’s a call to action that emphasizes self-reliance and internal strength.
Using Nigeria as a prime example, Okonjo-Iweala showcased the powerful reforms underway in one of the continent’s largest nations. Her point was clear: Africa is ready to own its future and shift global perceptions. She concluded with a bold statement that encapsulated her entire message: “In fact, if you’re not in Nigeria, you are not in Africa.” This isn’t just about geography; it’s a powerful declaration about the country’s pivotal role in shaping the continent’s progress and narrative.
