Tijani Onwenu Remembers His Mother, Onyeka Onwenu A Year After Her Death

Legendary Singer Onyeka Onwenu

The Legendary Nigerian Singer, Onyeka Onwenu who passed away a year ago was remembered by her son Tijani Onwenu. He paid tribute to the memory of his mother.

Tijani wrote on social media, “A year ago, today. RIP Mom July 30, 2024.”

Onyeka Onwenu who was fondly known as The Elegant Stallion passed away on July 30, 2024 in Lagos state during her music performance at a private birthday party. She died at the age of 72.

Onyeka was buried on August 30, 2024, in a private ceremony at Ebony Vaults and Gardens, Ikoyi, Lagos State. The private ceremony was held at the Fountain of Life church, Ilupeju in honor of her wish.

Onyeka’s legacy as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s music and entertainment industry continues to inspire young artists and generations.

Onyeka Onwenu was a Nigerian Singer, Human Rights and Social Activist, Journalist, Actress, Politician and X Factor series judge. She was born on January 31, 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State.

She was an actress known for her role in Land Apart, Rising moon(2005), and Muna(2019). She was a mother of two children, Tijani and Abraham. Onyeka notably kept her personal life private and often refused to disclose private information about her marriage.

Onyeka started her career as a broadcast journalist for Nigerian Television Authority(NTA) after her Masters degree from an American University in New York.

The Legendary was named ‘Elegant Stallion’ due to her significant impact in African culture and entertainment. She was also the Chairperson of the Imo State Council of Arts and Culture.

Most of her songs that were so popular are, One Love, You and I, Bia Nulu, Ekwe, Iyogogo, Merry Christmas, African Woman, Dancing in the sun, Sodom and Gomorrah, Greatest love, Odenigbo and so many beautiful songs.
