A video has gone viral showing former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, demonstrating his authority by making a newly elected state lawmaker, Hassan Shado, and his supporters sit on the floor during a meeting.
The video shows Shado, the winner of the Dekina-Okura II State Constituency by-election, being presented to Bello at the former governor’s residence.
In the video, Bello is heard warning the lawmaker-elect to obey every directive from Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and to support the current administration without question. Bello even pulls on Shado’s ear to emphasize his point, saying, “In everything that comes to the Assembly, everything, even if you don’t understand it, support the governor.”
Bello also reminded the new lawmaker that his victory was a product of collective effort and urged him to remain loyal to the party and the supporters who helped him win.
This incident has sparked a debate on the extent of political godfathers’ influence on elected officials in Nigeria.
