In a viral social media post, prominent Nigerian Catholic priest Fr. Kelvin Ugwu has sharply criticized those who mock supporters of former presidential candidate Peter Gregory Obi, insisting that Obi will never become Nigeria’s president.
The priest began his post by quoting some of the common remarks he hears: “Obi will never become the president of Nigeria, mark my words,” and “Obi will come third in the election as usual, you people are just playing.”
He questioned the motivations of those who make such comments, noting that they often speak “as if you are doing Obi a favour.” He challenged them to consider the state of the country and their own circumstances.
A Focus on Priorities
Fr. Ugwu argued that bragging about Obi’s potential failure does not solve the nation’s problems or improve their personal lives. He pointed out the stark difference in life between Peter Obi and his detractors.
“If Peter Obi is sick today, he can afford the best hospital in the world. If he wants to fly to any country of choice, buy property there, and settle, he can do it in just a second,” he wrote.
In contrast, he described a man who takes joy in Obi’s struggles but returns to a home with no electricity, no air conditioning, and a lack of basic comfort, yet still seeks to have children.
Using a phrase popularized by Asari Dokubo, Fr. Ugwu labeled such a person a “mumu man” (a foolish or stupid person), asserting that even his own wife is wiser.
The post has since gained significant traction and sparked numerous reactions across the internet.
